Myanmar's Pulse Exports Jump in JanuaryWASHINGTON - Apr 20/06 - SNS -- Strong demand from India and Pakistan in January helped lift monthly pulse exports from Myanmar to 57,603 metric tons (MT), up by 53% from the same month last year. Exports to Japan, which is a regular importer of Burmese beans and pulses, continued to drop in January. Matpe accounted for 48% of the total exports, followed by Mung bean (30%) and Toor Whole (17%). India remained a major importer India, accounting for 63% of total bean and pulse exports. The U.S. Agricultural attache for the country said, "The new bean and pulse crops began to enter the domestic market following ongoing harvest. A portion of Mung bean supplies was quality-wise affected by high moisture content due to untimely rains in last December. "Domestic demand for Matpe and Mung beans is high because of traders' speculation activities. On the other hand, overseas demand may be weak in the next few months from anticipated decrease in demand from India. Realizing that Burmese bean and pulse exports are vulnerable, the Government of Myanmar (GOB) has targeted to increase the exports to such new markets as Japan and Middle East countries."
