Specialty Crop Interest Ebbs in SaskatchewanREGINA - Apr 12/06 - SNS -- Interest in specialty crops has ebbed in the province this year, according to the first crop report of the year from Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food. Total specialty crop area is forecast at 5.793 million acres, down from 5.945 million last year, but well above the recent average of 3.451 million. The only specialty crop showing increased interest is field peas, which the provincial agriculture department says will climb from 2.695 million acres last year to a record 2.725 million this year, up from the recent average of 2.067 million. Lentil seedings are expected to slip back from 2.16 million to 1.99 million acres, though remaining well above the recent average of 1.384 million acres.
