Mixed Week for BirdseedsVANCOUVER - Apr 7/06 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets managed a mixed performance during the past week, with U.S. markets mostly unchanged while Canadian were weaker. In Canada, grower selling of canaryseed moved ahead of the needs of the market, forcing inter-dealer markets lower in relatively light trade. Growers were not pressing markets in the United States. Processors there remain mindful that seeded areas for sunflower and safflower will likely be down over last year, adding a positive tone to new crop markets. This is already reflected in new crop confectionary sunflower seed markets, where bids for small seed are bid at a two cent premium to spot. New crop larges were fetching a one cent premium last week, but spot markets surged from U.S. $15 to $17 per 100 pounds in the U.S. midwest, while new crop was unchanged at $16 for larges.
