Australian Livestock Slaughter Rises in FebruarySYDNEY - Apr 4/06 - SNS -- Slaughter activity increased in Australia in February, with 3.78 million animals processed, up around 235,000 head from January and up 113,000 head from year earlier levels. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said, "The trend estimate for cattle slaughterings rose for the fourth consecutive month, to 646,800. This was the highest figure recorded since June 2005. "The trend estimate for beef production rose for the fifth consecutive month, to 175,200 metric tons (MT). This was the highest figure recorded since June 2005." "The trend estimate for pigs slaughterings fell for the fourth consecutive month, to 439,900. This was the lowest figure recorded since July 2005. "The trend estimate for pig meat production fell for the fourth consecutive month, to 31,800 MT. This was the lowest figure recorded since July 2001."
