Confection Sunseed Area SinksWASHINGTON - Mar 31/06 - SNS -- Sunflower growers expect to plant a total of 2.20 million acres in 2006, down 19% from last year but up 17% from 2004, according to the USDA. Area intended for oil type varieties, at 1.85 million acres, is down 12% from 2005, and the non-oil varieties, estimated at 351,000 acres, are down 42% from last year. North Dakota sunflower growers intend to plant 1.03 million acres in 2006, down 115,000 from 2005, and growers in South Dakota intend to plant 495,000 acres, down 55,000 from the previous year.
