Some Relief From Cost-Price SqueezeWASHINGTON - Mar 30/06 - SNS -- Farmers in the United States experienced some relief from this season's cost-price squeeze insofar as the cost of farming managed to decline as much in March as the overall return from selling what is produced. The USDA's March Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) is 144% of the 1990-92 average. The index is down 1 point (0.7%) from February but 5 points (3.6%) above March 2005. Lower prices in March for feeder cattle, LP gas, nitrogen fertilizers, and feed concentrates offset higher prices for diesel fuel, gasoline, herbicides, and hay and forages.
