Japanese Bean Production ShrinkingVANCOUVER - Mar 17/06 - SNS -- Dry edible bean production in Japan continues to decline in the face of strong competition from other crops for land use, lower cost imports and a changing attitude toward consuming traditional confectionary items. This year's total dry edible bean area is expected to drop from 50,000 to 48,000 hectares. Average yields would result in a 101,400 metric ton (MT) harvest, down from 105,000 MT last year, but above the weather damaged crops of 2002 and 2003.
