Papaya Output Up Over Last YearWASHINGTON - Mar 10/06 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.49 million pounds for February, 12% lower than the previous month but 3% higher than February 2005, according to the latest USDA crop report. Area in crop totaled 2,285 acres, virtually unchanged from last month but up 2% from last February. Harvested area totaled 1,785 acres, unchanged from the previous month but 27% above a year ago. Late January rains encouraged flowering and growth but excessive February rains in Oahu and Kauai over-saturated some fields. Cooler temperatures slowed fruit development and increased the need for spraying. In Puna, younger fields came into production and new orchards were planted.
