USDA Mulls Potato Rate HikeWASHINGTON - Mar 9/06 - SNS -- The USDA is seeking comments on a proposal to raise the assessment rate on handlers and importers of potatoes. The rule goes into effect today with the opportunity to comment. This rule increases the assessment rate from 2 cents to 2.5 cents per hundredweight. In order for the National Potato Promotion Board to sustain three major programs -- domestic marketing, international marketing, and the nutrition campaign -- additional revenue is required. The ruling invites comments on changes to the rules and regulations governing assessments under the Potato Research and Promotion Plan. The interim final rule was published in the March 7, 2006, Federal Register. Comments must be received by May 8, and should be mailed in triplicate to: AMS Fruit and Vegetable Programs, USDA Stop 0244, 1400 Independence Avenue, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20250-0244; faxed to (202) 205-2800; or e-mailed to Jeanette.Palmer@usda.gov. Requests for copies of the proposed rule can be mailed to the same address, by calling (888) 720-9917, or viewing www.ams.usda.gov/fv/rpdocketlist.htm. Authorized under the 1971 Potato Research and Promotion Act, the Potato Board -- made up of producers, importers and a public member appointed by the USDA Secretary -- administers an industry-funded national research and promotion program to increase U.S. exports and domestic potato consumption.
