Minnesota Approves Soybean Check-OffST. PAUL - Mar 6/06 - SNS -- Soybean growers in Minnesota soybean approved a proposal to reactivate a state check-off in the event their national check-off program is discontinued. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture conducted the referendum for the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council during the week of February 13. Voting occurred at seven locations throughout Minnesota. The referendum asked growers if they wished to replace their national check-off with a Minnesota check-off if the national check-off program is discontinued. In the event that the national program is discontinued, the state council proposed a check-off in the same amount now charged under the national program (one-half of 1% or 0.005% per bushel). The measure passed by a vote of 396 to 67. Through an automatic check-off program, farmers pay a percentage of their sale proceeds to their commodity council. Commodity councils use these funds to pay for promotion, communication and research activities aimed at increasing profitability for growers.
