Cold Spring For Pea SeedingVANCOUVER - Mar 3/06 - SNS -- Long term weather forecasts released by Environment Canada during the past week raised some eyebrows in the special crop industry because they predict the next three months will be colder than normal. This could become an issue for early seeded crops because of an increased risk of frost. More importantly, colder weather tends to slow germination and initial crop development, putting crops at greater risk from weather later in the growing season and during harvest. Environment Canada says the problem is created by an "arctic vortex" which is pushing cold air down into the Prairie region and allowing warmer air to move through eastern Canada and into north, where unusually high temperatures are melting snow much sooner than usual.
