Birdseed Ingredient Markets Quiet
VANCOUVER - Mar 3/06 - SNS -- Few changes were noted in birdseed ingredient markets during the past week, with supplies available from growers and processors keeping in rough balance with the needs of the market.
It was a quiet week for avian influenza news, which was welcomed by birdseed packagers. While there has been no tangible impact on the pet bird industry, the spread of the deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza remains a background concern.
Governments are trying to make people more aware of the fact H5N1 is spread more readily by contact with live animals than by eating properly cooked poultry meat. Success may help limit the impact on poultry demand, but could focus attention on pets.
