Birdseeds Cautious Over H5N1 SpreadVANCOUVER - Feb 17/06 - SNS -- International birdseed ingredient markets finished the week on a mixed note, amid alarming news about the quickening pace with which the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza is spreading. During the past week cases were confirmed in Hungary, Germany, Austria, Egypt, Iran, Niger, and other countries. Europe has imposed bans of raising domestic poultry outdoors to prevent the spread from wild birds. The impact has so far been limited to dramatic decreases in poultry consumption rates. But, there remains a worry that consumers will also avoid purchasing and/or replacing pet birds for fear of contracting the disease.
