Chickpeas Finish on Firm NoteVANCOUVER - Feb 17/06 - SNS -- North American chickpea markets ended the week on a firm note, with improved trading interest show in both desi and kabuli chickpeas. Buyers on the Indian subcontinent continue to pick through available offers, looking for good deals on small caliber kabulis and desi chickpeas. The net results was trading activity in U.S. origin desi chickpeas at strongly competitive prices with Canadian and Australian origin product. Processors in the United States and Canada are preparing for a solid increase in seedings of kabuli chickpeas this year, amid growing warnings to growers to be careful to plant disease free seed. Even so, many growers are knowingly planting seed which contains low levels of aschochyta infection, hoping pre-seeding treatments will kill the disease.
