North American Cattle Herd GrowsWASHINGTON - Feb 15/06 - SNS -- The North American cattle herd grew 1% during the past year, with the January 1 herd totalling 111.9 million head in Canada and the United States, according to a joint USDA, Statistics Canada release. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 48.6 million head, was up 1% from a year ago. All cattle and calves in the United States as of January 1, 2006 totaled 97.1 million head, 2% above the 95.4 million on January 1, 2005 and 2% above the 94.9 million two years ago. All cattle and calves in Canada as of January 1, 2006, totaled 14.8 million head, down 2% from the 15.1 million on January 1, 2005, but 1% above the 14.7 million two years ago. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 6.3 million, was down 1% from the 6.4 million on January 1, 2005, but 4% above the 6.1 million from two years ago.
