Turkey Hatchery Jumps in JanuaryWASHINGTON - Feb 14/06 - SNS -- Poultry hatchery activity showed a solid increase in the United States during January, with eggs in incubators and poults placements rising substantially above year earlier levels, reports the USDA. Turkey eggs in incubators on February 1, 2006, in the United States totaled 29.8 million, up 10% from February 1 a year ago. Eggs in incubators were slightly above the January 1, 2006 total of 29.8 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central up 5% at 4,819,000 eggs; West North Central up 9% at 11,226,000; North and South Atlantic up 27% at 9,971,000; and South Central and West combined, down 10% at 3,831,000 eggs in incubators. The 24.4 million poults placed during January 2006 in the United States were up 11% from the number placed during the same month a year ago. Placements were up 3% from December 2005.
