USDA Lifts World Rice SupplyWASHINGTON - Feb 9/06 - SNS -- Global 2005-06 rice production, imports, exports, consumption, and ending stocks are raised from a month ago, according to the USDA's World Agricultural Outlook Board latest usage forecasts. The 2.11 million metric ton (MT) increase in global rice production to 408.99 million is due mostly to a larger crop projected for India, which rose 2 million MT to 87 million. Rice crops for Pakistan and Ukraine are also raised. Global imports are raised 360,000 MT to 25.94 million primarily due to increases for Indonesia, Nigeria, Malaysia, and South Africa while imports for Sri Lanka are reduced slightly. Global exports are raised 500,000 MT for Vietnam . World rice ending stocks for 2005-06 are projected at 66.6 million MT, up 0.5 million MT from last month, down 6.3 million MT from 2004-05, and the lowest stocks since 1982-83.
