U.S. Turkey Hatchery Activity RisesWASHINGTON - Jan 13/06 - SNS -- Turkey hatchery activity picked up its pace during December, judging from the latest USDA data on the sector. Turkey eggs in incubators on January 1, 2006, in the United States totaled 29.6 million, up 6% from January 1 a year ago. Eggs in incubators were 4% above the December 1, 2005 total of 28.5 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central up 3% at 4,616,000 eggs; West North Central up 7% at 11,360,000; North and South Atlantic up 11% at 9,407,000; and South Central and West combined, down 5% at 4,248,000 eggs in incubators. The 23.7 million poults placed during December 2005 in the United States were up 6% from the number placed during the same month a year ago. Placements were up 8% from November 2005.
