Bird Flu Anxiety in BirdseedsVANCOUVER - Dec 10/05 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets finished the week's trading on a relatively quiet note, with seasonally light demand reports from North American and European packagers. Canadian canaryseed exporters were troubled by reports Hungarian origin product was available at U.S. $270 per metric ton (MT) on a delivered basis, but with limited buyer interest. Birdseed packagers claim public fear over avian influenza, fueled by World Health Organization cautions it could be the start of a flu pandemic, is affecting demand. Some North American packagers say they are noticing the same problem here, with a few predicting there could be a sharp reduction in the number of birds kept as pets.
