Papaya Utilization Down in NovemberWASHINGTON - Dec 9/05 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.27 million pounds for November, down 8% from last month and 14% below a year ago, according to the USDA's final crop production estimates of 2005. Area in crop totaled 2,320 acres, down 3% from last month but up 10% from November 2004. Harvested area totaled 1,415 acres, down 3% from last month but up 4% from a year ago. Weather for November began wet but turned sunny during the last week of the month. Damp conditions encouraged weed growth and delayed spraying for disease causing increased reports of black spot damage. Dry weather earlier in the year resulted in gaps in the fruit columns.
