Mixed Broiler Hatchery PerformanceWASHINGTON - Jul 24/02 - SNS -- Broiler hatchery activity in the United States registered a mixed performance during the week ending July 20, with fewer eggs set but more chicks placed than was the case one year earlier. The latest USDA data reveals commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 208 million eggs in incubators. This was down slightly from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83%. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier. Broiler growers in the 19-State weekly program placed 165 million chicks for meat production. Placements were up slightly from the comparable week in 2001. Cumulative placements from December 30, 2001 through July 20, 2002 were 4.93 billion. The subscriber version of the article is available by Clicking here
