Canadian Special Crop Production RisesOTTAWA - Dec 7/05 - SNS -- Total Canadian specialty crop production is up from last year, as declines in field pea, canaryseed and mustard output were offset by gains in lentils, chickpeas and dry edible beans. Statistics Canada reports Field pea production in the Prairies declined 240,800 MT to 3.1 million MT, the result of a drop in yield and harvested area. The recent 10-year average production is 2.1 million MT. All three Prairie provinces reported decreases in field pea production, with declines of 60.9% in Manitoba, 2.5% in Saskatchewan and 11.5% in Alberta.
