U.S. Lentils Jump 22%WASHINGTON - Nov 10/05 - SNS -- Production of lentils in the United States is forecast at 5.10 million cwt (100 pound units) or 231,380 metric tons (MT), up 22% from last year, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates. With the new record crop, production in the United States shifted completely from the traditional growing region in the Pacific Northwest, with North Dakota and Montana emerging as the two largest producing states, accounting for 74% of this year's crop. Area for harvest is forecast at 432,000 acres, up 31% from the previous year. Average yield is expected to be 1,181 pounds per acre, down 90 pounds per acre from 2004.
