U.S. Grower Returns Drop in October

WASHINGTON - Oct 31/05 - SNS -- Prices received by American farmers declined in October, with the USDA's preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers dropping seven points during the month to 110, based on 1990-92=100.

The Crop Index is down 11 points (9.8%) while the Livestock Index is unchanged. Producers received lower commodity prices for broilers, corn, eggs, and soybeans. Higher prices were received for cattle, sweet corn, wheat, and turkeys.

The overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities a producer sells. Decreased average marketings of dairy, sweet corn, grapes, and wheat offset increased marketings of soybeans, corn, cotton, and cottonseed.
