Turkey Hatchery Slips in JuneWASHINGTON - Jul 12/02 - SNS -- Turkey hatchery activity in the United States slowed during June, with the number of poults placed down sharply from year earlier levels, according to the latest USDA data. Turkey eggs in incubators on July 1, 2002, in the United States totaled 33.1 million, down slightly from July 1 a year ago. Eggs in incubators were 1% above the June 1 total of 32.9 million. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central, up 4%; West North Central, up 12%; North and South Atlantic, down 9%; South Central, up 11%; and West, down 21%. The 24.4 million poults placed during June 2002 in the United States were down 7% from the number placed during the same month a year ago. Placements were down 4% from the May 2002 total of 25.6 million. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central, up 7%; West North Central, down slightly; North and South Atlantic, down 23%; South Central, down 5%; and West, up 6%.
