Turkey Hatchery Activity RisesWASHINGTON - Oct 13/05 - SNS -- The USDA says there was a good increase in poultry hatchery activity in September, with both the number of eggs in incubators and chicks placed rising above year earlier levels. Turkey eggs in incubators on October 1, 2005, in the United States totaled 26.7 million, up slightly from October 1 a year ago. Eggs in incubators were 5% below the September 1, 2005 total of 28.2 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central up 1% at 4,408,000 eggs; West North Central up 2% at 10,753,000; North and South Atlantic up 3% at 8,341,000; South Central down 24% at 1,574,000; and West down 1% at 1,671,000 eggs in incubators. The 22.7 million poults placed during September 2005 in the United States were up 7% from the number placed during the same month a year ago. Placements were down 5% from August 2005.
