U.S. Hay Harvest Down From 2004WASHINGTON - Oct 12/05 - SNS -- Production of hay other than alfalfa is forecast at 76.9 million tons, up 1% from August but down 7% from the U.S.'s 2004 harvest, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates. Based on October 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 1.94 tons, up 0.02 ton from August but down 0.11 ton from last year. Harvested area, at 39.6 million acres, is unchanged from August but down 2% from the previous year. Yields are at or below last year's levels in 19 States. Drier conditions than last year during the spring and early summer contributed to decreased yield expectations across much of the Corn Belt and southern Great Plains.
