Saskatchewan Special Crop Harvest Limps ForwardREGINA - Oct 11/05 - SNS -- Specialty crop growers in Saskatchewan continued to struggle to bring the remainder of this year's crop in from fields, judging from the last crop progress report from Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food. Harvesting of all crops is 76% complete, up from 69% last week. The specialty crop harvest ranges from 95% and 96% complete for lentils and field peas to 58% for canaryseed and just 1% for sunflower seed. Frosts and migratory birds caused the majority of the crop damage during the past week. Southeastern areas received snow during the past week, which lodged standing crops. Northern and west central areas are still in a surplus moisture situation. Reporters indicate that it takes very little moisture to stop harvest operations. Some regions expect to finish harvest in the coming week, while others could need at least until the end of October. Subscribers can read the full text of the article by Clicking here
