Australian Slaughter Activity Rises in AugustSYDNEY - Oct 4/05 - SNS -- Australian livestock slaughter activity posted a minor increase in August, compared to both year earlier and month earlier levels, according to the data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Commenting on the data, ABS said, "The trend estimate for lamb slaughterings rose for the thirteenth consecutive month, to 1.6 million. This was the highest figure recorded since October 2000. . . . The trend estimate for lamb meat production rose for the twelfth consecutive month, to 32,700 metric tons (MT). This was the highest figure recorded since August 2000." ABS noted, "The trend estimate for pig slaughterings fell for the seventh consecutive month, to 436,500. This was the lowest figure recorded since August 2001.. . . The trend estimate for pig meat production fell for the seventh consecutive month, to 31,800 MT. This was the lowest figure recorded since July 2001."
