Summer Potato Crop Plunges 12%WASHINGTON - Sep 12/05 - SNS -- The first potato harvest of the 2005-06 marketing year will down 12% from last year as the U.S. summer crop is expected to end up around 16.1 million cwt (100 pound units), according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. If realized, this would be a record low production since the series began in 1949, 6% below the previous record low set in 1980. Harvested area is estimated at 48,300 acres, 800 acres below the July estimate and down 10% from last year, the previous record low.
