Poultry Slaughter Advances 2%WASHINGTON - Jul 5/02 - SNS -- Poultry slaughter activity during May rose 2% from year earlier levels to 3.45 billion pounds on a ready to cook basis, according to the latest sector report from the USDA. The preliminary total live weight of poultry inspected during May 2002 was 4.61 billion pounds, up 1% from a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 3.89 billion pounds, up 1% from May 2001, and mature chickens totaled 77.0 million pounds, up 4%. Turkey inspections totaled 627 million pounds, up 2%, while ducks totaled 14.5 million pounds, a 7% decrease. Young chickens slaughtered during May 2002 averaged 5.12 pounds per bird, up 1% from May 2001. The average live weight of mature chickens was 5.31 pounds per bird, down 1% from a year ago.
