Alfalfa Hay Output Slipping in U.S.WASHINGTON - Aug 12/05 - SNS -- Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures production is forecast at 73.8 million tons in the United States, down 2% from last year, according to the latest USDA crop estimates. Yields are expected to average 3.34 tons per acre, a decrease of 0.13 ton from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 22.1 million acres, unchanged from June but up 2% from 2004. Yields are the same or below last year's level in 19 States. Across most of the Corn Belt and southern Great Plains, weather conditions throughout the growing season have been less than favorable. Dry, hot weather this year has led to reduced expectations for alfalfa hay yields in those regions. Illinois, down 1.5 ton from 2004, is expecting the largest decrease in alfalfa yields, as drought conditions this year have severely hurt yield expectations.
