VPA Imposes Permits on Vancouver TruckersVANCOUVER - Aug 1/05 - SNS -- The Vancouver Port Authority has told trucking companies that they will need to obtain 90-day permits if they intend to work at the port. The permit would impose the same rates on trucking companies as recommended by Vince Ready in his attempt to broker an end to the five-week strike which has crippled the movement of containers at the port. The port was able to make this move because the federal government has given truckers at the port a 90-day immunity from the country's competition act. This would allow them to operate under a fixed rate schedule. If the licensing agreement is expected to be approved by drivers, but the companies have yet to respond. If they get the licenses, the truckers could be back to work August 2.
