Greece Will Slash Sugar Beet OutputWASHINGTON - Jun 26/05 - SNS -- Sugar policy reforms in the European Union could have devastating consequences on Greece's sugar industry because steep reductions in prices guaranteed to growers should see some of the nation's 45,000 hectares of land diverted to other crops. The U.S. agricultural attache for the country said this is expected to result in a "drastic reduction of sugar production in Greece, and to lead to a serious loss of jobs at sugar refineries. "The Greek Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food has already instructed sugar beet farmers to consider alternative crops including energy crops for biofuel production. There is only one experimental bioethanol plant operating in Greece. The feedstock for this plant is corn and sweet (black) sorghum."
