Pinto Most Important Bean for U.S.WASHINGTON - Jun 23/05 - SNS -- Pinto beans are the most important class of bean grown in the United States, accounting for 45% of total output in recent years, notes Gary Lucier in a review of the class in the June edition of the USDA Economic Research Service's Vegetables and Melons Outlook. Production of this class of bean helped lift the United States into sixth place in the world in terms of production of dry round beans. The round types include classes such as pinto, navy, and kidneys but exclude broad, flat types commonly grown in countries such as China. The United States produced about 6% of world dry bean output behind Brazil (16%), India (15%), China (11%), Burma (9%), and Mexico (8%).
