USDA Considers Blackberry Grade ChangesWASHINGTON - Jun 20/05 - SNS - The USDA is asking for comments on a petition to revise the U.S. Standards for Grades of Dewberries and Blackberries. As a result of a request from USDA's Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee, USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service is reviewing all fresh fruit and vegetable grade standards, as well as the development of other commodity grade standards for usefulness in serving the industry. Chartered by the agriculture secretary in August 2001, the committee makes recommendations on USDA programs to better meet the needs of the fruit and vegetable industry. AMS is seeking comments on the possible modification of the color requirements. Comments are also requested on other revisions that may be necessary to update the standards to more closely reflect current cultural and marketing practices. Existing standards are at http://www.ams.usda.gov/standards/stanfrfv.htm. The request for comments will appear in the June 21 Federal Register. Comments must be received by Aug. 22 and can be sent by mail to David L. Priester, AMS Fruit & Vegetable Programs, USDA Stop 0240, 1400 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC 20250-0240.
