Papaya Utilization Down in MayWASHINGTON - Jun 10/05 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.22 million pounds for May, 11% lower than last month and 10% less than a year ago, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates. Decline is mostly the result of irregular rainfall during spring months, which affected papaya bloom and fruit maturation. Area in crop totaled 2,500 acres, virtually unchanged from last month but 19% higher than May 2004. Harvested area totaled 1,440 acres, unchanged from last month but 24% higher than a year ago.
