U.S. Peach Crop Down 2%WASHINGTON - Jun 10/05 - SNS -- The 2005 peach crop in California, Georgia, and South Carolina is forecast at 1.05 million tons, down 2% from 2004 and 1% below two years ago, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates. The California Clingstone crop is forecast at 510,000 tons, unchanged from the May 1 forecast but 5% below 2004. The State experienced ideal weather conditions during the bloom period. Full bloom was about a week ahead of last year. Harvest is expected to be delayed from the previous season due to cooler than average temperatures experienced during April. Set is expected to be lighter than a year ago but fruit size is excellent throughout the State. Harvest is expected to begin the last week of June. The California Freestone crop is forecast at 410,000 tons, unchanged from both the May 1 forecast and the 2004 crop.
