Greek Asparagus Crop May SlipWASHINGTON - Jun 7/05 - SNS -- Asparagus production will likely decline somewhat in Greece this year, according to a recent report from the U.S. agricultural attache for the country, from an estimated 22,000 metric tons (MT) in 2004 to a projected 21,000 MT this year. Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) has been grown systematically in Greece since the early 80s, mostly in central Macedonia (prefectures of Thessaloniki, Pella, Imathia & Serres), some in Thrace (Northeast), in Thessaly plain (prefecture of Larissa) and some in the Southwest in the region of Agrinion (prefecture of Aitoloakarnania).
