U.S. Cheese Output Down in AprilWASHINGTON - Jun 3/05 - SNS -- Total production of cheese by manufacturers in the United States was little changed from last year, but down on the month, according to the latest USDA data. Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 764 million pounds, 0.4% above April 2004 but 4.4% below March 2005. American type cheese production totaled 331 million pounds, 1.9% above April 2004 but 0.1% below March 2005. Butter production was 115 million pounds in April, 15.1% above April 2004 but 5.5% below March 2005. Frozen dessert: (comparisons with April 2004): Ice cream, Regular (hard) --- 77.7 million gallons, up 1.1%; Ice cream, Lowfat (total) --- 36.1 million gallons, down 9.1%; Ice cream, Nonfat (hard) --- 1.60 million gallons, down 20.3%; Sherbet (hard) --- 4.91 million gallons, up 5.3%; and Frozen Yogurt (total) --- 5.35 million gallons, down 16.0%.
