Michigan Pleased With Asparagus OrderLANSING - May 19/05 - MFB -- As hoped, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has agreed to buy canned and frozen asparagus for child nutrition and other domestic food assistance programs, and Michigan's asparagus industry is well poised to fill the order. This week the USDA announced its intent to buy 7 million pounds of canned and frozen asparagus for distribution by the agency's Food and Nutrition Service. The agency also purchased 7 million pounds last fiscal year. The announcement marks the fifth consecutive year USDA has purchased canned and frozen asparagus for domestic use. Asparagus processors will have to bid on filling the order, but Ken Nye, Michigan Farm Bureau (MFB) horticultural specialist and Asparagus Division manager for the Michigan Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Association (MACMA), expects the majority of the contracts to go to Michigan processors. "Michigan asparagus growers and processors have a good reputation for providing high-quality product," said Nye. Subscribers can read the full text of the article by Clicking here
