Slower U.S. Turkey HatcheryWASHINGTON - My 13/05 - SNS -- Turkey hatchery activity is slowing in the United States, according to the latest USDA data. Turkey eggs in incubators on May 1, 2005, in the United States totaled 29.1 million, 2% below May 1 a year ago. Eggs in incubators were 1% below the April 1, 2005 total of 29.3 million eggs. Regional changes from the previous year were: East North Central down 2% at 4,506,000 eggs; West North Central up 4% at 11,231,000; North and South Atlantic down 6% at 8,848,000; South Central down 10% at 2,035,000; and West down 10% at 2,513,000 eggs in incubators. The 23.5 million poults placed during April 2005 in the United States were down 5% from the number placed during the same month a year ago. Placements were up 1% from March 2005.
