Australian Livestock Slaughter Up In FebruarySYDNEY - Apr 6/05 - SNS -- Livestock slaughter activity increased in February, with the total number of animals slaughtered jumping 350,300 head above January to 3.66 million head, up 4.2% from the same month last year. Commenting on the numbers, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said despite the increase in actual slaughter activity, the trend remains down. "The trend estimate for calf slaughterings fell for the fourteenth consecutive month, to 65,300. This was the lowest figure recorded since records began in July 1979," ABS said,. "The trend estimate for lamb slaughterings rose for the seventh consecutive month, to 1.5 million. This was the highest figure recorded since January 2002.
