Potato Marketing Order UpheldWASHINGTON - Apr 2/05 - SNS -- Irish potato producers in certain designated counties in Idaho and Malheur County, Oregon, voting in a January referendum have decided to continue their federal marketing order program. USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service reported that 81% of all producers voting, and 95% of the volume of production represented by those producers voting, favored continuance. To continue the program, producers voting in the referendum had to approve the order by a two-thirds majority, either by number or volume of production represented in the referendum. The regulations in many marketing orders require USDA to conduct referenda periodically to allow industries recurring opportunities to assess the value of their orders. For potatoes, a referendum is held every six years.
