Papaya Usage Levels Drop in FebruaryWASHINGTON - Mar 10/05 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.28 million pounds for February, 10% lower than last month and 18% less than a year ago, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Area in crop totaled 2,250 acres, virtually unchanged from last month but 2% higher than a year ago. Harvested area totaled 1,410 acres, unchanged from last month but 5% higher than February 2004. The weather conditions were variable during February with a mix of showers and sunny periods. Cooler temperatures and shorter days have slowed crop progress. Soil moisture in non-irrigated orchards has been irregular but adequate. The erratic precipitation pattern is a contributing factor to February's reduced production.
