Russian Cotton Usage StabilizedWASHINGTON - Mar 8/05 - SNS -- Cotton consumption in Russian Republic has stabilized between 310,000 and 320,000 metric tons (MT) a year, with the result little potential is seen for imports to rise. The U.S. agricultural attache notes that cotton fabric production is concentrated in a few big plants that managed to survive the collapse of the Soviet Union. Usually these plants have merged with trading companies that supply their raw cotton, often taking the form of joint ventures with foreign suppliers. Increased cotton prices in the international markets in 2004 led to decreased imports of cotton and some decrease in fabric production.
