Lentil Gains May Slow, Peas RiseWASHINGTON - Feb 23/05 - SNS -- The rate of expansion in lentil area could slow in the United States this year, while field pea seedings may continue to escalate rapidly, suggests the USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS) in the latest edition of the Vegetables and Melons Outlook. "Driven by the income security provided by the marketing loan program, favorable market prices for lentils, falling prices for alternative crops, relatively low input costs, and the long-term benefits of having pulses in a crop rotation, U.S. dry pea and lentil growers are again expected to seed more acreage this spring than a year ago," write Gary Lucier in his analysis of the pea and lentil sector of the pulse economy.
