Great Lakes Grain Inspections Up in 2004WASHINGTON - Feb 17/05 - SNS -- Grain inspections in the Great Lakes region rose 2% in 2004 to 3.77 million metric tons (MT) of corn, wheat and soybeans, according to the USDA/ Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS). However, inspections were 26% below the recent 5-year average, the USDA said. "Although total grain inspections in the area are up, they had been slumping prior to 2004 due to changing grain trade patterns." In its weekly Grain Transportation Report, the USDA said, "Total inspections of wheat in the region increased 4% last year and were 2% above the 5-year average. Wheat inspections are up due mainly to increased shipments to the European Union, which accounted for over 71% of total 2004 wheat inspections from the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes export regions."
