USDA Holding TAA Hearings on PotatoWASHINGTON - Feb 15/05 - SNS -- The USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service will hold a March 2 public hearing on a petition filed by the Potato Growers of Idaho, Inc., under the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for Farmers Program. The potato growers requested a public hearing to present evidence that imported french fries are in direct competition with fresh Idaho potatoes. Under the TAA program, USDA provides technical assistance and cash benefits to farmers and certain fishermen if increasing imports of a like or directly competitive commodity contributed importantly to a decline in producer prices and a loss of net farm or fishing income.
