Hawaiian Papaya Utilization DipsWASHINGTON - Feb 9/05 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 2.54 million pounds for January, 17% lower than last month and 29% less than a year ago, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Area in crop totaled 2,245 acres, 1% higher than last month and up 2% from a year ago. Harvested area totaled 1,410 acres, up 1% from last month and 5% above January 2004. Weather conditions were variable during January with a mix of showers and sunny periods. Soil moisture in non-irrigated orchards has been irregular with rain at the beginning of the month, followed by two weeks of little to no rainfall.
